Range anxiety is real and it is hampering efforts to move drivers from internal combustion engines into electric vehicles. We point out some of the problems in the hope they will be addressed. We also cover what is working well.

Ford & Jim Farley, where’s that adapter you promised?

I love my Mustang Mach-e and tell folks it’s the best car I’ve ever driven. But like so many EV owners, I am frustrated by the lack of EV infrastructure to charge the thing.

So I was thrilled when Tesla opened up its charging network to us Ford owners. What a relief. But you either needed an adapter to use the Tesla chargers or would have to visit ones with MagicDocks installed. There are only three I am aware of in Massachusetts (Foxborough, Canton, and Lynnfield).

Earlier in the year, I learned that Ford was providing adapters to its owners. Upon learning of it in March 2024, I immediately signed up. I was informed that my adapter would arrive in August.

On July 31, 2024, I received the following note from Ford:

Due to ongoing supply constraints, there is a further delay of your complimentary Fast Charging Adapter. We know this is frustrating. Thank you for your continued patience.

To expedite your adapter delivery, we are rapidly working with our supply base to increase high-quality production. We are confident we will have a solution in the coming weeks. As adapter supply increases, our goal is to work as fast as possible to get your adapter to you.

We will continue to update you on the estimated timing of your adapter. In the meantime, make sure you’re ready to Plug & Charge with Tesla Superchargers by setting your vehicle’s automatic software updates to “On.”

I was now told that it would be September 2024. I’m a patient man, so I told myself to hang in there.

In September, when I did not see my adapter or any other love note from Ford, I decided to check the website and get an update. Here is what I found:

Jim and my friends at Ford, you’re killing one of your biggest cheerleaders for the Ford EV. Can you work a little harder to get that adapter to me during the useful life of the vehicle?
